Lessons For LifeLessons For Life2017-10-23“I take clean water home from school”; rainwater collection is the key water source at Kiina Primary School in Masinidi, and is primarily used for washing and cleaning.
Supporting schools to develop clean water facilities is a great way of supporting local communities, as children are able to take safe water home with them after school. Otherwise families may have to travel hours to collect water and then boil it to make it safe from infection. Lessons for Life are dedicated to implementing activities in schools which can help the whole community.

Columbia Outdoor SchoolColumbia Outdoor School2017-10-23While participating in the replanting project at Idlewild Park, students discovered these cool snake sheds in the dirt along the lake. PERFECT segue into our afternoon snake lesson about hibernaculums!
Snakes spend most of their spring and summer in foraging grounds close to a body of water, where the prey is abundant. By mid to late September, they stop feeding, leave the foraging grounds and move towards the nearby woodlands and rocky outcrops to find a suitable hibernaculum (or den) to spend the winter. Most snakes return to the same den year after year. They gather in great numbers at these dens, sometimes travelling many kilometers to reach the site.
After arriving at the hibernaculum, the snakes linger nearby for several weeks, basking in the open on warm days and retreating into the den on cold days and nights. Finally, by the late October to early November, they settle into deep recesses of the hibernaculum and fall into deep sleep, not to wake up until the snow thaws in the spring. ...
