P F T | O N F R E E D O M 💎
I don’t know about you but I can remember exactly where I was when my BBC news app flashed up with the breaking story that all 12 of the boys trapped in the cave in northern Thailand had been freed.
Now there are two reasons for this. The first that, yes of course, it’s so much more rare for news reports to be of good news (I always think ‘What now?’ when I get that famous red alert) but there’s the more interesting reason that freedom is a value we hold so dearly, particularly when it comes to children, that its being denied to us is too great a crime to bear. This once in a lifetime rescue gave the boys back their freedom and the world looked on, with hearts warmed. 💎
But aside from this complex rescue mission I wonder what freedom really means?
Because total freedom, like perfection, I don’t think exists. We all have slight, or perhaps major, ties – and hopefully, in the main, these are things that we love greatly. 💎
The decision to commit to a relationship - to get married, for instance - means you’re no longer completely ‘free’. My recent choice to have a baby means I can’t do entirely as I please anymore, (grandparents or babysitters need to be roped in.) Yet both of these major rites of passage are pretty wonderful and for many make up the foundation blocks of a happy, fulfilling life. 💎
As a new Mum, I’ve spent time over the past few months reflecting on the kind of parent I’d love to be. And there’s a brilliant saying you’ll likely be familiar with that portrays the essence of it; that I might give my daughter wings to fly and roots to ground her; roots of inner values, wings of independence, of freedom. 💎
Freedom, like wings, needs that caveat to reach its full potential - and what ‘roots’ freedom, what makes it work for good, is positive connection with others. 💎
As Nelson Mandela, who was born 100 years ago and who we are remembering on this week's Pause for Thoughts, said, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” 💎

Last night he joined Jo and Simon to chat about his adventures in music. At the age of 49 he believed he'd missed the boat for learning an instrument but after some intensive training and LOTS of practice, he eventually ended up releasing his own album of piano covers! 🎹 (there's hope for us all! 😲)
