How to approach holiday eating! 🎄⛄
The last 6 weeks of the year are a time period where most people gain some amount of –largely unwanted – weight. With this in mind, many people resort to one of the two following strategies. They either get in the “screw it” mindset and go on a see-food diet, where they eat anything they can lay their hands on, with the intention to lose it in January or they resort to extreme restriction, promising they won’t put anything remotely delicious in their mouth during the entire holiday season.
Both of these strategies are going to have detrimental physical and / or psychological health consequences, so they are likely best to be avoided. Unless you are prepping for a bodybuilding competition, it’s probably not a good idea to actively try losing a lot of weight during the Thanksgiving – Christmas – New Year’s Eve period.
Of course, this doesn’t mean going into the other extreme either and completely forgetting about your health and body composition. You can keep these in the back of your mind, while also partaking in festive dinners or parties your friends and familiy might organize, enjoying these events and not feeling guilty about them.
When it comes to eating itself, on the days where you are going to attend festive dinners you should definitely not starve yourself beforehand. Earlier in the day you can eat your regular healthy meals, focusing mainly on lean proteins and veggies, maybe a couple pieces of fruit. Then, when the dinner comes, you can freely enjoy some of your favorite foods with your friends and family.
Just make sure you choose foods you really like – those you would rate at least a 9 on your own food tastiness scale- and be mindful of the portions you have; don’t eat way past the point where you don’t enjoy the food anymore.
This extra food also means you’ll have way more energy that you can put to good use in the gym, so you not only get to enjoy the delicous holiday courses but you also put on some muscle along the way. It's important to stay active and train hard through the holidays! 💪

After hitting my glutes a bit yesterday I decided to do a full leg session. Still concentrating on bringing my weaker side up (right side). How I see it is: for a short stint I’m going to try some more frequent training focusing on my weak side using lighter loads, still training my strong side and doing equal compound exercises but just enough to maintain. I want to try bring my weak side up to create a stronger foundation for my training in the new year with both sides working better for an overall better outcome. I also know the best way to learn in training is to do. I’ll see if this works and keep analysing as I go along.
Other things I’m doing to help: booked my first Chiropractor session tomorrow, I know some imbalance is natural but I feel there is something additional going on, any kind of muscular activity stems from the Central Nervous System so hoping to find a root cause. I am also going to attend some functional fitness classes. I used to teach a lot of classes myself where I was actively leading and I don’t in London now: I feel my fitness and core strength have decreased since as I find it hard to push myself in these areas on my own so I wanna be pushed to my limits to get these back and be all-round super fit again. Everyone works harder with someone else pushing them, even pros!
