U.S. Marine Raiders of the Demolition team from the the 3rd Marine Raider Battalion pose with their M1 Garand and M1 Carbine rifles, in front of a captured Japanese dugout at Cape Torokina on island of Bougainville in January of 1944.
There were two original Marine Raider Battalions, however in the fall of 1942, two additional battalions were created including the 3rd Marine Raider Battalion. The 3rd Marine Raider Battalion and all the other raider battalions were composed of a weapons company and four rifle companies which each had a weapons platoon and three rifle platoons. The 3rd Marine Raiders were attached to the 2nd Marine Raider Regiment during the invasion of Bougainville. By early 1944 the methods of the raiders were not much different from that of a regular infantry regiment, so the Marine Raiders were dissolved and designated as the 4th Marine Regiment. •
