The Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is easily recognized through his dramatic and vivid brushstrokes. His later work is identified by the bright colors and previously mentioned distinct style. Earlier paintings of his are typically genre scenes of peasant life, and tend to be dark brown and gray in color. Van Gogh painted well over 2,000 paintings, including dozens of self portraits. Although his work is celebrated now, he was widely unpopular during his life. The aesthetic of his paintings were ugly to the people of the time, and the art was discarded. However, this worked very well for van Gogh, as he was intimidated and scared by the idea of fame. Now, he is one of the most famous modern artists, with a full museum of his work at The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. His most recognizable paintings tend to be ones he made in the last few years of his life, during his stay at the Saint-Rémy mental hospital, and his time in Auvers-sur-Oise. Other notable works of his include The Starry Night (1889), Wheat Field With Cypresses (1889), Bedroom in Arles (1888), and multiple still life paintings of sunflowers.
